Dr. Valentin Buffa

My research focuses on the evolution and paleobiology of early amniotes, with a particular focus on reconstructing how they interacted with their environment through biomechanical simulations. My project at the University of Zurich focuses on the skull and neck biomechanics of early sauropterygians in an effort to undertand the feeding and foraging behavior of these iconic Triassic marine reptiles.

In parallel, my other current projects include:

  • Biomechanics of gliding flight in extant and extinct flying 'lizards'.
  • Heat transfer simulations and thermoregulatory behavior in early amniotes.
  • Resolving the phylogeny of early reptiles and amniotes.
  • Taxonomy and systematics of African Permo-Triassic reptiles.
  • Fieldwork in the Permo-Triassic of southeastern Kenya.
