My research deals with the evolution of inner ear structures in anthropoid primates. At present, I am carrying out two main research lines that are focussed on the assessment of the phylogenetic affinities of fossil primates based on their bony labyrinth shape, as well as on inferring the evolutionary history of hearing in the hominin clade. To achieve my goals, I am using 3D geometric morphometrics and diffeomorphometrics appproaches to compare the intricate shape of the inner ear of primates. I am also developing biomechanical models of the organ of hearing for extant apes and humans, which will be then used to make predictions about the hearing capabilities of extinct hominins and hominids. |
